Spotlight on La Moye Dancing Club
The La Moye Dancing Club was established in October 1967 by Bert Sawyer the then Manager of the La Moye Hotel and Jimmy Henry a local band leader in Jersey. Prior to each dance Mrs. Rita Le Marquand a dance teacher, used to begin the evening with a half hours tuition to the many people attending these functions. The Club has run a dance season historically almost fortnightly from September through to the end of June since its inception. There has always been a summer break since the early days. It is possible that the heat and men having to wear lounge suits in those days had something to do with it. In spite of this there was a waiting list to join the Club. Dancing is suitable for all age groups and is excellent gentle exercise. It is also fun and much better than sitting at home watching TV. All dances are to the fine tunes of the Club duo 'Norman Jones' and 'Norman Hilton'. "Even if you don't dance it is nice to sit, listen, watch, make new friends, and enjoy the relaxed friendly atmosphere". Even a learner or first timer will find that they are welcome and should not worry about their standards or image. We all have to start somewhere. "I know that there are lots of people out there that have learnt or are learning to dance and only need to build their confidence and practice". There are those who have not danced in ages and they should attend to revive their skills. The Club concentrates on mainly Ballroom dancing and a sample of the dances undertaken are Ballroom :- (Quickstep, Waltz, Fox-trot ), Latin:- (Cha-Cha-Cha, Rhumba, Samba ), popular Sequence dances:- (Mayfair Quickstep, Saunter Together, Square Tango, Tango Sereda, Etc.), some old time, and, the odd fun dances. Groups from other Clubs and
Associations are welcome to attend any of our events. If your organization
fancies a buffet dance let us know and we may be able to arrange one, such as
St. Valentines Night, at Easter (when there is an Easter Bonnet Competition, a
sight not to be missed!), and the Christmas Buffet Dance. At these events there
are a few Spot Waltzes and fun Quicksteps with small prizes for winning couples.
